Visual Narrtive: Living Voices Week 2

Already made my storyboard, I know that I have 2 environments to draw which are theater exterior architecture and interior design.

Value painting exercise in class

This week’s session has been an educational one as I learnt a lot about color theory and how value works in an enviromental painting.

The exterior is inspired by a screenshot from The French Dispatch (2021) by Wes Anderson. I love the simple color palette with great contrast which cleverly brings out the main building but I am more impressed by the composition in that frame which is a nice view from a slightly higher ground and this gives me ideas of how to animate the introduction of my animation.

Final outcome

The interior design is inspired by a school theater picture and just like what I did with the outside of this theater, I also play with contrasting colors. I learned about color hue during the sessions and understood why purple could be used in darker areas to make a yellow-colored area pop out.

I really enjoyed adding mini people to the audience, even though it is repeated work somehow , because I included my favorite anime characters and weird-shaped faces or bodies.

Mouth sheet

Inspired again by this GIF animated by Naomi WrasmanJess Lindsay & Clarisse Angkasa, I created a mouth sheet with all the sounds I analysed from the audio. I referenced my own mouth when creating and found it hard to make it cartoonish as obviously I have a real mouth which is realistic and with complicated structures. This is where the diary of a wimpy kid animation comes in helpful.

It is my first time doing a X-sheet and my tutors make the tutorial really clear and easy to understand so it is not a really diffcult task but I think it do require a lagre amount of time and patience as you have to go backward mutiple times to make sure you have the mouth on the right frame.

Introduction animation supported by Mental Canvas

I wanted to try the introduction animation and see the effect matches my expection so I put it in a software which is able to make the paintings look 3D.

CONCLUSION:

This week has been occupied by the X-Sheet as it is really time-consuming but I had great fun painting my environments . My tutor suggested to leave the introduction animation for later as a tutorial on how to animate similar effect in Adobe After effects is going to be delivered in up coming weeks.
